Life-Saving Rules

Whenever construction, maintenance, demolition, remediation and other similar work is conducted, there is the potential for risk and harm to people and the environment and for damage to equipment.

The International Association of Oil & Gas Producers (IOGP) has established 9 Life-Saving Rules, which are essential safety guidelines for oil and gas operations to prevent serious workplace incidents. These rules focus on common, high-risk areas where fatalities have occurred. They are designed to be easy to understand and apply, promoting a culture of safety and vigilance.

You may see or hear about these rules when working on WPCG members sites. The WPCG are sharing the Life Saving Rules to help our contractors instantly recognise and understand the rules that help keep us safe. Click on each rule to learn more.

This quick guide explains why the 9 Life-Saving Rules exist — and how they save lives. It includes real examples, simple actions, and key things to watch for on site.

These rules are designed to protect you, your team, and everyone around you.
